In an Emergency　緊急のとき

• Dial 110 for the police.
  ※In a non-emergency (lost and found, questions, report of lost or stolen items, etc) please contact your nearest police station directly (see list below).
  The police also operate a Police Consultation line (警察相談専用電話　keisatsu sōdan senyō denwa) for non-emergency consultations: Tel: 075-414-0110.
• Dial 119 for an ambulance.
• Dial 119 for the fire department.

Police　警察

There are three types of police stations in Japan.

• Police Station (警察署　keisatsu sho): The major police station of a city or area that manages regional branches.
• Police Substation (駐在所　chūzaisho): Regional branches often located outside the downtown area. Police officers that work at substations live in the area and work there full time.
• Police Box (交番　kōban): Small branches located throughout the region to provide patrolling and other services locally. Police officers rotate between working at the police station and the kōban.

日本の警察は、警察署・駐在所・交番があります。

• 警察署（けいさつしょ):全市の安全を守ります。
• 駐在所（ちゅうざいしょ):地域の安全を守ります。警察官がその地域に住んでいます。
• 交番（こうばん）):地域の安全を守ります。警察官が交替で働いています。

Police at regional police boxes and substations protect the community by performing the following duties:

• Prevention of crime or accidents through patrolling.
• Apprehension of criminals.
• Education about crime and accident prevention.
• Attention to citizen's issues and demands.
• Lost and found, police reports.
• Assistance to lost children.

Fire Department　消防署

The fire department in Japan responds to fires and emergencies. The fire department, not hospitals, sends ambulances in response to accidents or 119 emergency calls.

When you need an ambulance or there is a fire, dial 119 and clearly and calmly explain what has happened.

消防署は火事のときに火を消します。消防署は病気やけがのときに救急車を出します。

けが、病気、火事のとき、119に電話してください。

落ち着いて、はっきりと「＿＿＿がありました。」と言ってください。
