Akechi Kamemaru was born in Kameyama—which is now Kameoka—on October 23rd in the first year of the Tenshō Period (1573).
The Kameyama region was protected by Tamba Kameyama Castle, built by Lord Akechi Mitsuhide. In 1578, the daughter of Lord Akechi, Tamako, accidentally fell into the moat surrounding Kameyama Castle and was saved from drowning by a turtle (kame in Japanese) living in the moat. The lord was so thankful that he made this turtle part of his retinue and granted him the name Akechi Kamemaru.
Although Lord Akechi Mitsuhide has long since passed away and the castle has turned to ruins, Akechi Kamemaru continues to practice the ways of the samurai and, with his shell for a helmet, continues to stand guard over Tamba Kameyama Castle.
